Project Description:

Unity Township Municipal Authority

Pleasant Unity Sewage Treatment Plant Expansion and Modification

The Pleasant Unity Water Pollution Control Plant is located at the south side of SR 130 at the intersection of SR 130 and SR 2017, approximately 1 mile east of Pleasant Unity.  The Unity Township Municipal Authority, which serves approximately 6000 customers, expanded and modified their existing Pleasant Unity Water Pollution Control Plant.  Gibson-Thomas Engineering Co., Inc. recommended and designed the increase in capacity from 0.5 mgd to 0.95 mgd while making provisions for a future expansion.  In conjunction with the plant expansion, the Authority abandoned the Laurel Bilt Sewage Treatment Plant and constructed a sewage pumping station to direct the wastewater from the Laurel Bilt watershed to the expanded Pleasant Unity facility.  It was also recommended to the Authority that the existing Extended Aeration facility be converted to an Anoxic/Oxic (AO) treatment system.  This was required to meet strict discharge limitations on the receiving stream.  The plant modification included the addition of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection and new sludge holding and processing facilities.  These modifications were completed in October 1997.  The facility received the 1998 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region III Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Excellence Award for the Small-Advanced Category.
